The State of New Jersey to another hit this month dropping 17,200 jobs in March for the 14th straight month. The losses increased the state’s jobless rate to 8.3 percent of the workforce from 8.2 percent in February.
Eight of the 10 job categories the department uses showed declines last month, with the largest losses in the leisure/hospitality sector (down 5,900 jobs), professional/business services (down 4,600), manufacturing (down 3,700) and trade/transportation/utilities (down 1,800).
The reduction in leisure/hospitality jobs came largely from restaurants and hotels, which felt the effect of reduced consumer spending during the nationwide recession that began back in December 2007.
“Casino hotels in Atlantic City have been especially hard-hit by the economic slowdown, leading to layoffs and other staff reductions,” the department said. Small gains in jobs were seen in March in construction (up 500 jobs) and education/health services (up 400).
As the state continues to give back jobs one can only wonder when this when this crisis will end.
